Thousands of lifeguards, military personnel and community members assumed a massive challenge of running, walking and stepping throughout the TD Garden on Sunday at an event sponsored by the Bruins to raise money for beneficial organizations.
“This year’s event broke records, raising more than $ 1 million for lifeguards and military beneficial organizations,” said Hannah Wolfe, Boston Bruins Communications Coordinator. “With 2,671 participants, participation exceeded last year’s challenge for almost 1,000 people and included 292 different teams.”
The ninth annual BFIT challenge, organized by the Boston Bruins and the Boston Bruins Foundation and sponsored by National Grid, began at 9 am on Sunday, with the participants aligned to walk and run throughout the stadium.
The challenge collects money for charity organizations that serve military personnel and the first to respond, including the 100 Massachusetts club, the MR8 team, the Children’s Fire Fund for Newton, the fallen heroes of Massachusetts and the operation service.
The event raised a total of $ 1,184,528 at 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon, Wolfe said.
Since it started nine years ago, the event has raised $ 4.7 million for charities, Boston Bruins said in a statement. In the 2024 challenge, the Bruins declared that more than 1,700 people participated and attended more than 4,000 guests.
The Police and the Miliar Division of the challenge began at 10 am, the community division followed at 11 am, and the divisions of Fire and EMS joined at noon.
Bruins’ alumni joined Sunday’s challenge, with the Patrice Bergeron center joining the military and the police, the Adam Mcquaid defense after the community division and goalkeeper Andrew Raycroft participating with Fire and EMS.
Every year, the best fundraising teams of each division and the highest fund collectors in general receive Bruins awards.
