A Boston man had a history of domestic violence and multiple restriction orders of the mother of his three children before he allegedly hit and strangled her until death on December 12, prosecutors said during the reading of positions in the Municipal Court of Boston the Wednesday.
“She was much more than Shantel: she was a daughter,” said Shanakay Gillespie, the young She was a friend, and most importantly, she was a mother.
Eric McPhail, 37, was prosecuted in the Central Division of BMC for a murder position in relation to the death of Shantel Gillespie, 30, at his home in South End on December 12. McPhail declared himself innocent and was ordered to keep without bail.
McPhail wore a blue and wives mask on Wednesday. He remained silent throughout the process and faced the Banks of the Court full of the family and friends of Gillespie.
Just before 7 pm on December 12, the judicial documents indicate, the Boston Police received a 911 call from a worried witness that McPhail could have killed Gillespie, and the officers were sent to their department in 390 Harrison Avenue at the southern end.
In the call, the witness reported that McPhail had left his three children at home with clothing bags and made statements that caused the witness to worry about Gillespie’s well -being, said Wednesday the assistant district prosecutor Erin Murphy. He allegedly told the witness that he was going to go for a long time “and denied knowing his mother’s whereabouts, according to judicial documents.
Another witness informed that he said: “This is probably the last time you will know about me,” documents said.
In the apartment during the welfare control, the police found Gillespie’s body, Murphy said. An autopsy determined that his cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation and force of force in the head.
The surveillance images, said Murphy, shows that McPhail enters the Apartament building just a few minutes before Gillespie on the night of December 11. Through the footage, Murphy said, you can see McPhail to leave for a few minutes around midnight before returning and get the three children at 8: 02 am December 12. He returns for another hour and a half later in the morning, he said.
McPhail has a history of domestic violence against Gillespie, including previous criminal charges and two 2021 and 2022 restriction orders, as the documents show.
The defendant’s arrest follows a “long and thorough investigation,” Suffolk County said Wednesday, Da Kevin Hayden.
