Winchester: With the control of the Middlex League title at stake, he was a second year student who faced the occasion.
Jack Charchaflian scored 19 points, while Senior Captain Alex Casey invested 16 points when Winchester defeated Arlington, 63-55, in front of a house full on Friday night at Winchester High School.
The victory gives red and black (13-1) a two-game advantage in the race for the League Championship. Arlington Wing and the MVP of the League returning James Dingman led all scorers with 24 points.
“It was a great victory for us in front of our local fans, Winchester coach John Fleming, he said. “Jack and Alex have been offensively and both took a step forward tonight.”
Winchester now leads Arlington and Lexington for two games each in the Liga race. There are four league games for red and black, including a house game with Lexington on February 7.
Courtesy of 10 points from Casey, Winchester had an advantage of 38-28 in the middle. The spy stirrups responded with Jack Zambardino Engineering a 10-1 race to cut the deficit at 39-37 in the middle of the third. Dingman gave the advantage to the pious with four consecutive points, but Casey connected a three-point land on the bell to push Winchester back 48-45 after 3.
Dingman kept Arlington right on him while buried a triple to cut the red and black advantage to 52-50 with 5:44 remaining. Winchester got the last laugh. Charchaflian placed him home with a transfer from the elbow to stretch the advantage to four, and moments later he sank a jumper to put Winchester in eight and put an end to Arlington’s hopes of a victory on the road.
Dawson English provided a setback in the bell to give Winchester a 19-16 advantage after one. The hosts extended their advantage in the second with Casey hitting from three points of land to put Winchester in the Top 29-20.
Dingman worked to keep visitors at a surprising distance scoring 12 during the first 16 minutes, but Winchester achieved an advantage of 38-28 in the break.
